As we reflect on one hundred years of the National Yearling Sale in New Zealand, this book celebrates the best performed horse that emerged from each of those one hundred sales. Identifying this single, standout performer was no mean feat for many sale editions, as the sheer calibre of the New Zealand thoroughbred consistently brought to market across the span of a century is quite remarkable.

The result is that several elite graduates are omitted from this publication. As examples, the 1947 Sale uncovered two exceptional racehorses in Grey Boots and Tauloch, the 1986 Sale featured both Super Impose and Beau Zam, and the 2003 Sale produced two champions in Xcellent and El Segundo. While in each case the latter horse does not feature here, it is worth acknowledging that many years produced multiple racetrack stars, and the most distinguished alumni could be hotly debated.
